2010 Expedition

BlueXplorer's 2010 African Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Expedition

BlueXplorer.com organised a two week expedition from October 16-31, 2010 for four students (Diane Danneels, Elena Picci, Solange Mbanefo, Hugo Manzini) to experience and live the African bush in the heart of the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa in a small research and conservation center. Biologists, Michael Scholl and Emilio Valentino, accompanied their adventures, along with Craig Spencer and the experienced Ezulwini Paradise Camp team and staff.

Dear Diary,

Today is the day I am leaving to go to South Africa.  I am so excited and I am curious about the days to come. What’s going to happen? What will we do? Those questions go through my brain while I wait for the taxi to come. It will bring me to the train station where I will see Michael Scholl, Solange Mbanefo, Elena Picci, Hugo Manzini and Emilio Valentino, the people who are coming with me to the trip.

Dear Diary

It has been about 24 hours since we left and till now it has been awesome. Everybody gets on well together and we laugh about the silliest things like the fight between Hugo and Elena. Their fight is if you eat the mousse on drinks or drink it. They still haven’t decided which one it is, so we will see when we get back. Yesterday in the airport we had burger king for dinner and the moment after I got my order I spilled my ice tea all over the table and chairs.…

Right now, I am in the mini bus with the rest of the group and I am bored out of my mind. We have been driving for 4 hours already and there is nothing to do. I have tried to sleep but each time I fall asleep I wake up because of the bumps on the road. There isn’t a lot to see on the road since we are riding on a lonely road and we can’t talk because there is always one person sleeping. …

I can’t believe we are actually here! This place is quite accurate to what I imagined. We are staying in bunks with two beds and around us there is only nature. There are no fences to keep the animals out so there is always a chance that a wild animal comes close to us. We also met the camp mascot: Goosy, the mangoose. She is so adorable! …

Dear Diary,

This morning I woke up at 7 a.m and I just had to wash my hair! Solange and I made our way to the shower and I stuck my head under the cold, refreshing water, which revived me. An hour or so later John came and told us that there was an batteler eagle that was hurt and that needed our help. We all got ready as quick as a flash, eager to be able to help and we jumped into the land rover with a cage for the eagle and we made our way towards the wounded animal. …

Dear Diary,

This morning I woke up at around 5.30 a.m, because Solange wanted me to wake up to see the sun rise. As much as I love sunrises, I couldn’t get myself to stand up. First of all, I was tired, second of all, my camera had no batteries, third of all, I still have 8 more days here, I am sure I will catch the sun rise one of those days. …

Dear Diary,

I woke up with a start early this morning and with a sudden urge to go and draw on the roof, so I took my computer, pencils, paper and books, and I got dressed. While I was preparing myself, I made more noise then I intended do and woke Solange up. I said sorry and made my way out to the watch tower. I sat down and decided to first do some homework. …

Sunday October 24, 2010

Dear Diary,

Sorry I didn’t write yesterday, but I just couldn’t muster the force. You see, since my last entry things haven’t been going well at all. I will try to explain it to you, from the beginning. You see Diary, we were at the pool with Amy and the rest and then we went to see some elephants. I can barely remember what happened during that time, but all I know is that I was feeling worse and worse by the minute. …

Dear Diary,

Another couple of days have gone by without having told you what has been happening. I probably should start with the beginning.

So, where was I? Oh right! I was feeling much better, and everyone was planning to go on a game drive that evening. Also, a couple and their three kids, that Michael knows and are also from Switzerland, were supposed to arrive that afternoon. …

Dear Diary,

Yesterday and today were interesting days. Around noon we left the camping place a foot. We took water with us and gave all the stuff we needed for later to John, because he would bring them to where we were sleeping that night. Where that was, was a surprise and so we followed Craig in an Indian file, trying to make the least sound possible, otherwise we might attract wild animals. …

Friday October 29, 2010

Dear Diary,

Today was probably the best day. Well at least the beginning. I woke up this morning feeling great, as if I had never been sick, except for the persistant cough. I had a normal breakfast, I sat down and laughed with the others. Everything was going well! While sitting with the others, I learned that John, Elena, Solange, Hugo and I would go on our last game drive, while Emilio, Michael and Craig would go and fill up the water tank. …

Sunday October 31, 2010

Dear Diary,

I just got home and I am exhausted, but I am still writing to tell you what happened. Don’t you feel lucky? All right, so saturday morning I woke up feeling okay, although I was sad we were leaving. I quickly went to take a shower, since the water was working again. My last shower there. I went back to the room and closed my luggage with (I hope) everything in it. …

Wednesday November 3, 2010

Dear Diary,

Tomorrow I am going back to school. I should have started tuesday, but I couldn’t because the doctor told me it would be a bad idea and insisted I didn’t. She prescribed me again some antibiotics, because the dosage they gave me in South Africa wasn’t high enough. I also seem to have an autite, which is why my ears were so blocked. …

Monday November 15, 2010

Dear Diary,

At the moment I am on my third antibiotics prescription. The last one didn’t seem to help either, since I am still coughing, but otherwise I am back to normal. I am in school, with all my energy. When I look back I regret not having taken more advantage of what was there, but it’s always when it is to late that you realise. …

Dear Diary,

The reunion finaly happened. We all got together and exchanged the pictures and movies. Michaels showed us the ones he made and they were so great! When you look at them, you feel like you are still there, living the moment. In a way, I still sometimes feel that I am there, like a whisper or a shadow that passes and that for a brief second transports me back to the place we once were. …
